The next beta on our road to 2.0 stable contains many many bug fixes and improvements, bringing us further to the final release date! Please test this beta extensively so that we can get the 2.0 to be as bug free as possible.
To find out what has changed between the last beta and this one, read the changelog here.

The last beta unfortunately rendered the application and context menus unusable on Windows and Linux. This beta restores them. We would like to apologize for any inconveniences!

The third beta addresses a few urgent nuisances which you have reported after the release of beta.1
. Notably, it re-introduces the autosave feature which many of you were missing and it fixes a bug that could lead to data loss. Additionally, the styling for the Linux releases has been further improved.
Please continue to report bugs which you encounter!

The second beta for Zettlr v2 contains many small fixes that have been reported by users in the meantime, plus a few things we planned on doing before but didn't manage to implement for the first beta. Most notably, the following things have changed:

) should now be generally highlighted correctly.bib

This is the first public beta release for Zettlr 2.0. After a long period of development and several nightly versions, it is time to begin the public beta phase. A few minor bugs and nuisances still remain, but the 2.0.0 branch is stable enough for production use now. Please read the caveats below to be prepared for this release, since we've changed a lot and thus, a few new features might look irritating at first!
Although the release is extremely stable, there are a few things you should keep in mind:

Read our Postmortem on this issue and the last one on our blog.
This is a hotfix that fixes a potentially severe security-issue, reported to us by the Japanese cybersecurity organisation JPCERT. It was reported that due to insecure iFrame handling on our side, malicious actors could take over users' computers using specially crafted iFrame-embed codes or Markdown-documents containing such an iFrame.
This release closes this vulnerability. Specifically, the following precautions were taken:
src
-- in the security disclosure, the attribute srcdoc
has been used to maliciously access the test system. While this means that certain features are not supported during preview (e.g., allowfullscreen
), remember that the attributes will still be exported so that in HTML exports, they will work.Note that you can completely disable any iFrame pre-rendering in your display preferences.
We would like to apologise for the inconvenience. If you are interested in how it came to this situation, please read our Postmortem on this issue.

This is a hotfix that updates a vulnerable Electron version to a safe one. This
is in response to a row of CVEs that have been detected in the source code of
Chromium in the past days. With an outdated Electron-version (<12.0.6), it was
possible for an attacker to take over your computer via Zettlr using a crafted
HTML webpage.
This release fixes Zettlr 1.8.7, which was vulnerable to this kind of attack. It
upgrades Electron from a vulnerable 11.x.x-version to the safe version 12.0.6.
DO NO LONGER USE ZETTLR 1.8.7! RELEASES PRIOR TO 1.8.8 MUST BE REGARDED AS UNSAFE!

This is a hotfix that restores the missing application icons on Linux. Furthermore, we fixed one small issue that would cause the editor to "jump around" under certain circumstances.

This is the last patch before we begin working on Zettlr 1.9, which will feature much better flexibility in exporting. This patch mostly fixes some important bugs and performance issues that were haunting the previous release. Make sure to install it to stay up to date!
This release requires your configuration folder to be named "Zettlr" (with a capital Z), not "zettlr" on both Windows and Linux. macOS doesn't care about the capitalization, so it will continue to work. So if your configuration apparently is not loaded when you first start this update, just rename the folder. The folder names that you need are listed in our Setup guide.

This is the possibly last patch for 1.8.5, and the last one to support 32bit operating systems. It is the first to include support for Apple Silicon (M1) chips. Additionally, there are some notes for Apple Silicon and Windows ARM64, so please make sure to read the changelog below!
Also: Make sure to reset your Pandoc command once again in the advanced preferences tab, especially if you receive "could not open binary file"-errors from Pandoc!
This version provides native Apple Silicon/M1 support, a.k.a. the darwin/arm64 architecture. Make sure to download the correct update file (either x64 for Intel-based Macs or arm64 for the new Apple Silicon chips).
If you possess one of the new Apple devices sporting Apple's M1 chip, please see whether or not the application is able to run the built-in pandoc (which is still compiled for 64 bit). If your bundled exporter fails, please report an issue.
As of the current development build, Microsoft has finished support for running 64 bit applications on ARM computers. However, this is not yet officially released, so the bundled Pandoc might not work and you have to return back to the system-wide installation. However, if the bundled 64 bit Pandoc does work on your ARM computer, please notify us so we know that we can officially support Windows ARM again!
Due to efforts within the file manager structure, we could re-enable the functionality to drag files out of the app without having to press any modification key before actually dragging something.
Make sure to reset your Pandoc command once again in the advanced preferences tab, especially if you receive "could not open binary file"-errors from Pandoc!

This fourth patch to Zettlr 1.8 resolves quite a few issues. But the more pressing issue is that from this release onward, 32 bit builds are officially deprecated. This means you need to have a 64 bit operating system in order to continue Zettlr. As almost all computers nowadays support 64 bit, it might just involve upgrading your operating system. Zettlr 32 bit will be discontinued beginning from 1.9.0. Please make sure to follow this issue to stay up to date.
This version ships with a debug notification that will inform users of deprecated operating systems about that fact. This debug notification cannot be turned off, but will be removed in Zettlr 1.8.5, which will use the bundled Pandoc version first of all. Beginning with Zettlr 1.9.0, we will no longer support 32 bit applications, so you have to make sure your operating system supports 64 bit. If your Windows is still 32 bit, there is a very high chance that your processor actually supports 64 bit. Please check this, if you want to continue using Zettlr.

This patch fixes a few problems introduced in the last release, as well as newly encountered problems. Furthermore, this release breaks compatibility with Pandoc 2.10. If you need to use Pandoc 2.10, make sure to use a custom PDF template. As a small gift for you, this release also includes two neat improvements: First, you can now simply autocomplete a citation key to have Zettlr wrap it in square brackets automatically (if the citekey is not already within brackets). Second, we added a quick filter to the file list, allowing you to quickly filter the files within the current directory.

This second patch for the 1.8 series contains again numerous bug fixes and improvements. Furthermore, we have finally switched to Electron 11, which means that native Apple M1 support is just around the corner. Please see the changelog below to see what has changed!
The default Pandoc command now targets Pandoc 2.11 and above. In order to use the new command, make sure to "reset" it once, or (if it contains customisations) replace $citeproc$
with --citeproc --bibliography "$bibliography$" $cslstyle$
. However, you can retain compatibility with older versions by replacing the new part --citeproc
with --filter pandoc-citeproc
. The new $bibliography$
variable will be replaced with /path/to/your/library.json
. Furthermore, the $cslstyle$
-variable will be replaced with --csl /path/to/your/style.json
