Iridium - Starting from scratch

Published by ParticleCore about 5 years ago

As you all know the development on the extension stopped a while ago due to the lack of free time on my part to dedicate to this hobby, however I've never gave up on the extension.

After reflecting on what to do next I've decided to drop Userscript and Chrome versions in order to facilitate the process of manipulating the YouTube source code through a far easier method than my previous method.

Unfortunately the API required for this method to work (webRequest.filterResponseData()) is only available in Firefox, Chrome appears to have decided to not implement it. It is only for this reason Chrome no longer has any support.

As a result of this change developing and maintaining the extension will be far easier and lighter when considering that there were times it took months to find a way to restore the video auto play feature after YouTube changed their code, for example.

Other good news is since the extension is no longer required to abide by Google's T&C features that could not be implemented before can be implemented now, such as video download.

This release is very light, it only comes with three features at the moment since I believe it would be better to have few new functioning features released whenever they are ready instead of waiting for the whole product to be completed.

With that said, every future release should include a new feature until the feature list is completely implemented.

This version was increased in its major number to give leeway for the previous version to be worked on if it ever needed to be. There are no plans for that though, it is just a precaution and helps differentiate this version refactor from the previous barely functioning version.

I appreciate all the people that have helped and encouraged me to keep developing, it is always a valuable gesture to receive.

Iridium - Fixes update, feature removal and announcement

Published by ParticleCore almost 6 years ago

Yesterday I received an email from the Chrome Webstore warning of impending removal of the extension from the web store if nothing was done in 7 days. Today I receive another email, this time informing that the extension has been taken down.
For this reason I had to rush the smallest fixes I could push in hopes of getting the extension up and running on the store.
This was the result of users reporting the extension as not working, users that have low tolerance for bugs and can't wait for them to get fixed. For this reason the Chrome extension version will become a paid extension, as it was announced in #648 . Chrome users that don't want to pay for the extension can use the Userscript version, that one will continue being free, this measure meant to weed out the short-tempered users and their report quick trigger and make my life less problematic.
The Chrome extension will be free for the Patreon users.
As a consequence of this situation I have decided to remove the features that are incompatible with YouTube's instead of making them compatible since I was rushed to push an update for the Chrome extension, this means Always Playing is now gone. In the future I might revisit this feature again.

Iridium - Fixes update

Published by ParticleCore almost 6 years ago

YouTube recently made significant changes to their source code which has postponed some work on the extension in favor of fixing the biggest problems as of right now. If nothing else changes the development will resume as normal from now on.

Iridium - Fixes update and removal of crypto currency miner

Published by ParticleCore over 6 years ago

While it has been a very interesting few months with CoinHive's crypto currency solution for an alternative donation method, it has become clear that it is no longer worth keeping it. Too many users have been abused by tools like these which lead to carpet bombing of blocks, ranging from the smallest anti-malware services, anti-virus up to enterprise level blockades, which made it very hard - some times impossible - for users to contribute using this method willingly due to their protection software.

As a user that actually prefers to use this when services and websites offer it - in a friendly matter - it makes me sad that such a great alternative has been killed so soon, but by no means I disagree with all the justifications for what happen, users come first when they are being targeted the way they were with these tools.

I don't know what will be the next alternative that I might explore since the ones I've researched before were unacceptable to me:

  • Ads: I hate ads, I don't trust them unless I were to be the one serving them directly and I doubt any store would accept an extension like this running ads
  • Telemetry: Although it would be great to understand which features users use the least so that I could drop them and focus on new ones, selling telemetry is futile. Any service interested in acquiring telemetry always demands their own source code running on the client to acquire that information directly and that way I would be unable to let them register only anonymous information, like blocked videos instead of the user's username and other private information.
  • Subscription: Seriously, how would this even work in the context of an extension like this. What features could I make payable that would be worth the headache and I don't see this working very well on AMO or Chrome for that matter, we have SPOI Options - aka former YouTube Options - as an example of how people react to such a change. Although in their case it was a full paywall, not just for a few features

Which leads me to what we have now; Patreon and standard PayPal donations. I don't mind this and I will keep these donation channels open and they have been helping out more than with the previous extension, so until it becomes necessary, for the time being I will not be procuring any more alternatives to generate income.

With that said, thank you to everyone that has been helping with donations and feedback, it has not been easy but I have not given up.

Iridium - Fixes update and possible feature removal

Published by ParticleCore over 6 years ago

With the arrival of YouTube's own implementation of the always visible player, Iridium's version becomes redundant. For this reason the removal of this feature or made as an alternative is being considered and discussed in https://github.com/ParticleCore/Iridium/issues/412

My apologies for the delay on fixing the bugs this past week, there was no spare time that I could find until today.

Starting today I will be experimenting with the GitHub project tabs for development and bug fixing tracking. If users wish to know the current state of a bug or feature development they can follow it here:
